'Displacement' of Turkish citizens, 506% increase in asylum applications abroad

In Turkey, two TikTok users have recently been arrested for sharing a satirical video of Turkish youth being unable to go abroad during the epidemic. The incident has fueled controversy over the departure of highly talented individuals and young people.

According to Arab News, two 23-year-old users apparently angered the Turkish authorities and were accused in their satirical clip of "blatant insult to the symbol of state sovereignty.

According to recent statistics, where humor has become an unforgivable act for some officials, many citizens prefer to go abroad.

According to the latest figures from the European Office of Statistics, "asylum applications from Turkey to Europe have increased by 506% since 2019."

According to experts, the widespread displacement of people is mainly due to economic difficulties and a systematic crackdown on freedom of expression and democracy.

Turks seeking asylum in Europe rank fifth in asylum, immigration, and temporary protection applications in European countries, behind Syrians, Venezuelans, Afghans, and Iraqis.

Turkey is followed by Somalia, Eritrea, Iran, and Pakistan.

In 2015, 2,995 Turkish citizens applied for asylum in European countries, but in 2020 that number rose to more than 18,000.

This trend has only increased in recent years. Educated young European countries are trying to create new lives and new futures, especially in Germany, where most Turks have applied for protection and asylum.."
